BESSIE EMOGENE YORK HAMMER age 94, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday January 30, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Melvin and Myrtle Johnson York of Springfield, MO. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with burial to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Dr. Michael Smith, Dr. Eugene Cotey, and Dr. Raymond Langlois will officiate. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Hammer is survived by her son Larry (Linda) Hammer of Indianapolis, daughter Jeanne (Jim) Travers of Nashville, and two grandchildren David Travers of Smyrna, Lisa Travers of Murfreesboro, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hammer is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Walter Elwood Hammer.

Mrs. Hammer was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a good and faithful servant to the Lord, having taught Sunday School for more than 55 years, and active member of The Auxiliary of Gideons International. Mrs. Hammer also helped start a mission of First Baptist Church. The family wishes to thank the staff of NHC Health Care, Murfreesboro for their care and kindness during Mrs. Hammer's residence there. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideons International.
