William J. Gange, an eyewitness of Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox courthouse, died at the age of 102 years and 6 months yesterday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. D. Evans, 251 Home Avenue, Oak Park. Mr. Gange was a retired farm auctioneer. He was active and in good health until five weeks ago.
He was born in Canada on June 11, 1837. He served with Company I, 5th Wisconsin regiment, in the civil war and often recalled the day that Lee's surrender brought the conflict to an end. Gange married the year after the war and lived most of his life in Charles City, Ia. His wife, Margaret, died in November, 1937.
Surviving in addition to Mrs. Evans are four sons and three other daughters. They are Mrs. G. H. Kolterman and J. B. Gange of Oak Park; W. B. Gange, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Grace Fisher, Elma, Wash.; R. T. Gange, Portland, Ore., and Mrs. W. B. Johnston and J. L. Gange of Charles City. There are 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
The funeral and burial will be in Charles City Thursday.
