Died Thursday Morning in His Eighty-Seventh Year

Shortly before 10 o'clock Thursday Samuel M. Bowman, an aged citizen of Harrisonburg and for many years one of the most prominent Masons in Virginia, died at the home of his son, William R. Bowman, on West Elizabeth Street.
For several years Mr. Bowman had been much enfeebled by age, and during the past summer he was able to leave his home but little, although his general health was good. More recently he was confined to his room, and for the last three weeks it was evident that the end was near. It came Thursday morning at 9:40 o'clock, when he peacefully slept away, his death resulting from the infirmities of old age.
Mr. Bowman was born in Woodstock, VA on December 20, 1817 where as a youth he learned the tailor trade. In his early manhood he removed to Georgia, where he spent some time, after which he returned to Virginia. He located in Harrisonburg in 1849 and resided here continuously from that time until his death.
For many years he was one of the most active business men of this community, as well as one of the most successful, although during the latter part of his business career he met with reverses, from which he never successfully rallied. He was at one time associated with his late brother, Robert Bowman, in conducting then what was the largest livery business in this section of the country. At another he and Capt. Charles A. Sprinkel jointly conducted a general mercantile and auction house, doing a large business. He was also proprietor of the Exchange Hotel.
Mr. Bowman was best known as a Mason, being a past High Priest of Rockingham Royal Arch Chapter No. 6 and past Grand High Priest of Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Virginia. He was made a Master Mason in Macon, Georgia in 1838 and on June 18, 1864 he was elected to membership in Rockingham Union Lodge, No. 27, A.F. and A.M. He was elected Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch Chapter of Virginia in 1879, and also served several terms as District Deputy Grand Lecturer.
Being a man of vigorous mental endowments Mr. Bowman quickly mastered all the unwritten work of Masonry, retaining it with a rare degree of accuracy even during his declining years, and as an elocutionist of unusual powers he was recognized throughout Virginia as one of the most accomplished Masons of the state in the exemplification of Masonic Degrees.
Mr. Bowman is survived by two sons and one daughter. They are, William R. Bowman and Mrs. O. J. Billhimer or Harrisonburg; and Peyton G. Bowman of Sumpter, South Carolina.
The funeral was held at 8 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Methodist Church, with which Mr. Bowman had connected himself several months ago.
The services at the church were conducted by Rev. D. H. Kern, assisted by Rev. Dr. S. K. Cox. At the grave, in Woodbine Cemetery, they were conducted by Rockingham Union Lodge No. 27 A.F. and A.M., of which Mr. Bowman was the oldest member. Thomas L. Williamson acting as Worshipful Master, Rev. Dr. Cox, Chaplain, and Col. O. B. Roller, Marshal.
The pallbearers were composed of members of the Lodge. They were Ed S. Conrad, Charles E. Frazier, J. Frank Blackburn, John T. Long, B. Bloom and S. H. Bennett.

Samuel was a farmer and a brick layer. His mother was Susannah "Susan" Kratzer.
