Robert William Redman was the son of George Redman and Demima Butler, daughter of George Butler and Caty Elliston. His maternal great-grandfather, John Butler, ran what became known as the "Brick Tavern" just outside of the Village of Brideport on the old "Big Road" in Franklin County, Kentucky. Robert lived in Shelby, Anderson, and Franklin Counties.

Robert and Catherine were the parents of sixteen children, Charles E. Redman, Martha Jane Redman Bennett, George Thomas Redmon, Frances Redman Bennett Cardwell, Sarah Catherine Redman, who lived just 7 days, Stephen Arnold Redman, Susan M. Redman, married to James Walker Long; Hattie Redman Bowler, Robert Dudley Redmon, Mittie Bell Redman Wingate, John William Redman, married to Sadie Spaulding; Amanda "Maudie" Redman married to Bert Thomas "Bertie" Bowler, brother to Jesse Bowler; Phillip Dodridge Redman married to Mary Elizabeth Roberts, Samuel Major Redman, and two other children who died in infancy.

Although each of Robert's and Catherine's children were given Robert's surname of "Redman" at their birth, beginning around 1910 and thereafter, they all began to use the surname of "Redmon".
