Son of Captain Thomas Dowell Higginbotham and Rachel Wilson McKinney.

He married Mary Agnes McKinney on March 1, 1863, in Polk Co., MO, officiated by his grandfather, James Rane McKinney.

During the Civil War, he was a private in the Union Army (Home Guard) in Company A, 8th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry from January 1862, until honorably discharged 0n Nov. 19, 1863.

He was pastor of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in 1883, and ordained as a Minister of the Gospel on May 13, 1888.
