William Tannahill was born in Ayrshire,Scotland and came to Huntingdon, Canada when he was 9 yrs. old. He married Janette White in Huntingdon. He came to Nashua, Iowa in 1855. He is listed as a charter member of the Little Brown Church. His oldest son, George, was the first baby to be baptized in the Little Brown Church. William was the first to enlist in Co. B, 7th Iowa Regiment when the Civil War began. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Belmont and was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Va. He was a prisoner for 1 yr and was released, wearing the same clothes he was captured in. He was able to walk out of the prison but as soon as he was free he ate some food and because he had been starved for so many months in prison he died 3 days later. He is buried in Annapolis, Maryland in the Military Cemetery there. His son, George H. Tannahill, had this monument erected here in Greenwood Cemetery where his 2 children are buried.
