Elmer Abraham Morgan, 90, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011 after a lengthy illness. F

Formerly a resident of Lexington, N.C., he had resided at Sunrise Assisted Living of North Hills in Raleigh for the past year to be near his daughter, Norma Baker Cook, a resident of Raleigh.

Born August 19, 1920, in Stanly County, N.C., to David Jerome and Rosa Barbee Morgan, Elmer grew up near Albemarle with two sisters, Eveola Morgan Hinson and Vassie Morgan Taylor, as well as three brothers, Ryland N. Morgan, Dewell C. Morgan, and David Ravon Morgan, all of whom predeceased him.

Elmer's favorite occupation was with Lexington State Bank where he worked into his 80's before retiring. Always a gentleman, Elmer showed his love and caring nature by giving of himself and his talents freely and will always be remembered for his expert craftsmanship in building furniture. He served honorably in the Navy during WWII on The USS Knight destroyer ship, manning the radar and sonar, making 33 roundtrips across the ocean.

Elmer was married to Mildred Baker Morgan, mother of Norma, for 26 years; she passed away in 1977. He is survived by his daughter as well as many close nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Monday, Feb. 7, at Forest Hills Memorial Park in Lexington, N.C., at 11:30 a.m., with visitation before the burial from 10-11 a.m. at First Reformed United Church of Christ, 104 E. Center St., Lexington, N.C. 27292.

Arrangements by Piedmont Funeral Home, 405 S. Main St., Lexington, N.C. 27292.

Memorial contributions may be made to his church or a charity of one's choice.
