Luther enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 22 September 1864 at Fishers Hill and mustered as a Private in Company G, 23rd Virginia Infantry. He was captured on 23 September 1864 at Strausburg, Virginia. He was paroled as a prisoner of war on 27 April 1865 at Ashland, Virginia.
