According to Civil War pension index, Samuel's widow* received a pension for her husband's service on May 1, 1865. (Application # 91850 & Certificate # 56607) a pension for a minor was also given (Application # 158979 & Certificate # 120981)

Source: Case Files of Approved Pension Applications of Widows and Other Dependents of Civil War Veterans A pension for the minor children of Samuel Higgins was applied for. The children's names were; Fred Washington Higgins, born February 29th, 1860 at Monson, Piscataquis County, Maine and Frank Howard Higgins, born March 10, 1864 at Castle Rock, Dakota County, Minnesota.They were then residents of Piscataquis, Maine. His widow Hannah E. Higgins (nee Flanders) had received her widow's pension up until her re-marriage to John R. Libby on October 28, 1867.
