Services for Walter Preston Yates, Jr., 87, of Lufkin, will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2005, in the Gipson-Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ty Phillips and Rev. Cary Modisett officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery.
Mr. Yates was born October 17, 1917, in Kaufman, Texas, the son of the late Ethel (Barrett) and Walter Preston Yates, Sr. He passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2005, in a Lufkin hospital.
Mr. Yates was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was retired from Texas Foundry, where he worked as a time rate technician. He was a veteran of the United States Army's 8th Air Corps, serving as a top turret gunner in 32 B-17 missions during World War II. Mr. Yates was a member of Redland Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Elizabeth Yates of Lufkin; son, John Yates of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and LaJune Yates of Huntington; grandchildren, Randy Yates, Annie Carter and husband, Kevin; great grandchildren, Jacob Carter, Kylie Carter and Faith Carter; brother, Joe Yates of Lufkin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Yates was also preceded in death by brothers, Jack Yates and Charles Robert Yates, and sister, Mildred Douglas.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Harry Douglas, Jack Yates, Jr., David Yates, Frank McCarty, Jimmy McCarty, James Hughes, Dennis Hughes, Richard Collmorgen, David Collmorgen and Joe Collmorgen.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Gipson-Metcalf Funeral Home.
