He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Rgr Dalzell died as a result of an operational accident that is now under investigation. He was working in Check Point Ranger in Nad-e Ali, central Helmand province. His family said that Rgr Dalzell was fatally wounded by another RIR soldier in a tragic accident after he returned to his base.

Aged 20, he was from Bangor in County Down, Northern Ireland. After completion of his recruit training he joined 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment at Tern Hill, Shropshire, in July 2010. Known as "Dal", he was always ready with a smile and armed with a quick wit.

His parents said, "David was a loving and caring son and he was very proud to be a soldier. We are very proud of David as a son and he leaves behind a void that will never be filled. He will be missed by his brothers and sisters."

Funeral with full military honours was held on February 18, 2011 at Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church, Bangor.
