Actress. Best known for her stage roles in "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Hunchback." On a tour of the US she met and married one of her chief admirers – Pierce Butler, whose grandfather had signed the Constitution. They settled in Georgia where he had inherited a large plantation. She was appalled by the conditions under which the slaves lived and worked, and kept a diary of this time which was later published to support the cause of the Union.
