United States Fighter Ace. Known for many years as "America's Greatest Living Ace", he shot down 37 enemy aircraft in both World War II and the Korean War. Shot down over Europe during World War II, he spent eight months in a German Prisoner of War camp. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame and an airport in Westhampton Beach, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, bears his name.
