I am Etta, the third in the family. My mother was the Primary President when I was a little girl.
Our little Grandma Gale use to come by our place in Franklin going to Duncan in her little buggy, a one-horse buggy. She had a black purse that always had a few goodies in for us Gale kids.
We loved to go to Aunt Sadie Mortensen's home when the nice big yellow peaches were just ready. We used to go out in those peach trees and just eat peaches and climb those trees to get the best ones.
When we moved from Franklin to Taylor we had to wait for the Black River to go down as it was in a near flood stage. I was only 7 years old and washed fruit jars for a woman who lived there and she gave me some beads of blue and white for helping her. I lost a wooden water bucket when the swift water swished it out of my hand. I knew everyone would miss that bucket.
When 8 years old I was baptized in the Silver Creek by my father.
While we were living in Show Low a Mr. Whiteman and his family were there selling Cable Nelson pianos. My Dad ordered one of these beautiful pianos for me and I was so proud and happy to have it. I showed my mother some of the notes on the piano and she could read and play some of the notes with her right hand.
Our father was gone a lot with freight wagons. He had four wagons and four horses on each set of wagons, which gave him about eight or ten horses. He would haul freight from Holbrook to Fort Apache being gone 8 or 10 days from home. It was a hard life for him because he had to sleep out in the cold. He got an opportunity to to trade his Show Low ranch for another ranch on the San Juan River from a John Stocks. So we moved from Show Low in these wagons and had to leave the big piano behind. Dad sold it and brought me a big sack of candy to make me feel a little happier.
