Heart Attack is Fatal for Former Sheriff
John E. Harvey, 65, of 1020 East 5th Street, Bellwood, former sheriff and jail warden of the county, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home about 2:30 p.m. yesterday. He had been under treatment for a heart ailment by a Bellwood physician for some time.
Mr. Harvey was found dead in bed when Mrs. Harvey returned to the home which she had left on an errand about noon yesterday. He was working in the yard at the time of her departure and had eaten a sandwich before going to his bedroom to lie down, it was learned.
His long period of service for the county was terminated last Nov. 1, when he resigned as jail warden, the position he had held from 1947. First named as a deputy sheriff in 1934, he continued in that capacity until 1942, when he was elected sheriff for a four-year term.
His first entrance into politics was in 1929 when he was elected....(continued on page 3, column 2)
