Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 6th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City. Father Daniel Wolfgram will officiate.
Burial will be in the St. Charles Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion, Gertje-Van Lith Post #229, Big Stone City, SD and V.F.W.Big Stone Lake Post #3964, Ortonville, MN.
Honorary bearers will be the Big Stone Canning Company Employees who were like family to him, and all members of American Legion, Gertje-Van Lith Post # 229, and V.F.W. Big Stone Lake Post #3964. Casket bearers will be: Jerry Koenen, Mike Stolpman, Jeff Lantis, Sonny Kaiser, Duane Schuelke, B.J. Schuelke, Don Raddatz, and Roger Raddatz.
Norbert J. Berndt was born January 23, 1926, in Big Stone City, SD. He was the son of Frank and Armeda (Schuelke) Berndt. Following his education, Norbert served in the United States Army, enlisting on April 23, 1944, at Ft. Snelling, MN. He served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Norbert received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged on June 3, 1946, at Camp McCoy, WI. Norbert returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage with JoAnne Martin in 1955, in Ortonville, MN.
Norbert was the plant manager for the Big Stone Canning Company until his retirement. He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City. He was a life member ofAmerican Legion, Gertje-Van Lith Post # 229, and also served as commander. He was also a life member of V.F.W.Big Stone Lake Post #3964. In October of 2009, Norbert was thrilled to be a member of the Honor Flight to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Norbert was an avid hunter and fisherman. His family will cherish the memories of his soft heart and giving personality. He will be greatly missed by his many friends, family, and kitties.
Norbert Berndt is survived by his wife, JoAnne of Big Stone City, SD; one son: Todd and wife Diane Berndt of Wilmot, SD; two daughters: Julie Berndt and husband Kevin Lohse of Dawson, MN; Lori and husband Jim Berreth of Eureka, SD; 8 grandchildren; two sisters: Antonia Edwards of Colorado and Leona Martin of Santa Rosa, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.
