Prolific Character Actor. He was born in New York, the youngest of four children. He began his career in vaudeville and also played in stock companys before going to Broadway. He earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for his performance in "Picnic" (1955) and another for his role in "Anatomy of a Murder" (1959). Other important films in his career: "Bus Stop" (1956), "Operation Petticoat" (1959), and "Pocketful of Miracles" (1961).
