John Rand (65171516)

Suggested edit: John Fay Rand, 87, of Sonora, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at his home.

John Fay Rand was born on April 12, 1932, in Clinton, Massachusetts, to Dorothy Eleanor Fay Rand and Herbert Leslie Rand, Jr. His elementary and high school education was received in Lancaster, Massachusetts.

John served on active duty in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and in the Inactive Reserve from 1956 to 1960. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1956 with a BSEE Cum Laude. He worked for the IBM Development Laboratory as an engineer and received a certificate from the IBM Engineering Training Program. For several years he worked for the Navy Department as a senior computer systems engineer. He rounded out his working career as Assistant Vice President, Vice President, and Senior Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Virginia, until he retired in March of 1985. While there he was responsible for developing the automation of all banking wire transactions within the entire Federal Reserve Banking System.

John moved to Sonora in 1985 and was a Planning Commissioner for the City of Sonora for six years. During that time, he was also Chairman of the Management Committee of the Main Street Program. For one year he was Chairman of the Bach Festival Committee. John was a Docent at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park where he volunteered for 18 years. In 2014 John was awarded Volunteer Emeritus in recognition of service from 1997 to 2014. He was a Mason and a Shriner.

John’s hobbies were singing, drawing cartoons, and flying his own Piper Cherokee. He began drawing cartoons because his mother and father were both professional artists. His father liked to draw cartoons in his spare time.

After ten years of operatic voice training, John sang with the Binghamton, New York Triple Cities Opera Society for several years. On arriving in Sonora, he acted in musical productions with the Columbia Actors Repertory Theater and sang with the Community Chorus for many years. He was an avid supporter of the arts.

John is preceded in passing by his parents; his wife, Jean Brown Rand; and his brother, Herbert Leslie Rand III.

He is survived by his life partner, Jacqueline Gustafson and family of Sonora; his sister, Fay Rand Morris and her husband, Frank M. Morris Sr. of Pomerene, Arizona; nephews Frank M. Morris, Jr., Wayne Sanburn, and Brian Sanburn; nieces Jennifer Rand Harris and Rebecca Rand Maul; grandnephew Joseph Harris; and grandnieces Gina Marie Harris, Brina Ann Morris, and Ashley Evelene Concienne.

A Masonic Service for John will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2019, at Heuton Memorial Chapel, 400 S. Stewart Street, Sonora, followed by inurnment in the Masonic Cemetery in Sonora.

The family requests donations to Adventist Health Hospice in Sonora or Shriners Children’s Hospital, as specified by John, in his memory.
