Josephine C. "Josie" Linville was born 5 July 1857 in California. She was the daughter of Hiram H. Linville and his wife Rebecca. On 15 March 1877, she married James Davidson Monihon in Maricopa, Arizona Territory. Monihon, who was twenty years older than she, was a Union veteran of the Civil War.

The Monihons resided in Phoenix, where Monihon worked as a real estate agent. He joined the Masons, and Josie became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. They had one daughter, Rebecca Ann, born 26 June 1882.

After a successful career in local politics, James Monihon died in 1904 of pulmonary tuberculosis and was buried in the Masons' Cemetery. Josie received a widow's pension. In 1921, Josie had her husband's remains removed to Greenwood Cemetery.

She died 24 March 1931 and was buried next to him. Her death certificate is filed under "Monihan".
