James Davidson Monihon was born 6 November 1837 in Oneida County, New York, to Irish immigrant parents originally surnamed 'Monaghan'.

He moved to California in 1854 and was living in La Porte when the Civil War broke out. On 16 August 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company F, 1st California Infantry. This unit was then sent to Arizona to stop the Confederate drive west from Texas. Monihon was wounded during a skirmish at Sand Creek in the Tonto Basin on 18 June 1864. He was discharged 29 August 1864 at Fort Whipple, Arizona Territory, with the rank of corporal.

On 15 March 1877, Monihon married Josephine C. "Josie" Linville in Maricopa, Arizona. He was 39 and she was 19 at the time. They had one daughter, Rebecca Ann, born 26 June 1882.

By 1880, the couple was living in Phoenix, where Monihon worked as a real estate agent. He joined the Masons, and his wife became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He also joined the John Wren Owen GAR post and eventually became a post commander. An influential citizen, he was elected mayor of Phoenix in 1893 and 1896.

Monihon was awarded an invalid pension for his military service. He died 2 September 1904 of pulmonary tuberculosis and was originally buried in the Masons' Cemetery, plot B15 L3 G5. Josie received a widow's pension. In 1921, his remains were reburied at Josie's request in Greenwood Cemetery and an impressive stone monument was erected.
