Mr. Joseph Powell Barentine Jr., 90

Graveside Services for Mr. Joseph Powell Barentine Jr., age 90, of Lindale, are scheduled for 10AM on Saturday, February 5, 2011 in the Pilgrim Cemetery near Elkhart, Texas with Drs. Paul Powell, Ron Wells & Rev. Charles Moore officiating. Services are under the direction of Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Directors in Lindale.

Mr. Barentine died on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in the Hospice Homeplace in Tyler.

He was born on April 13, 1920 near Pottsboro to Joseph Powell Sr. & Margaret Amazon Long Barentine and lived in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, & California where he worked on the farm, picked cotton, logged timber, (where he broke his leg), a dynamite man on a road crew, and worked in a service station. In 1950 he began his building business and moved to Tyler in 1956.

Joseph married Willie Miller on Nov. 10, 1942 and she preceded him in death on November 25, 1996.

On November 8, 1997 Joseph married Thala Murray and in 2006 adopted daughters, Aylssa & Lynnea moving to Lindale.

Joseph was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army and joined the Army at the age of 16. After the US Army discovered his age he was kicked out and in February of 1942 he re enlisted at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

After the war, Joseph taught field artillery at Yale University. In 1950 he began his building business retiring in 1979 and in 1980 met Dr. Paul Powell who asked Joseph to go to Belize, and this began his journey in the mission field. Joe Barentine became a "Construction Missionary" for several decades instrumental in building multiple churches in Belize and in Nicaragua as well as several homes for poor and elderly families in Nicaragua. He was the contractor/builder for the Paul Powell Retreat Center and later became a building consultant for the multiple churches and buildings in Mexico.

Mr. Barentine is survived by his wife, Mrs. Thala Barentine of Lindale; daughters, Aylssa Barentine and Lynneya Barentine, both of Lindale; son: Joseph Powell Barentine III of Dallas;

Family will receive friends from 6PM to 8PM on Friday evening at the Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home in Lindale.
