Elmer Johnson, seen here, and his brother William continued the fishing business started by their father, J.P. Johnson, at Waverly Beach in 1907. The brothers were responsible for improving the road to Waverly Beach, paving the parking lot, and building a bathhouse. They fished in Lake Michigan from April until October using a flat-bottomed boat to set both pond and floating nets, with which they caught lake trout, whitefish, perch, and, in the spring, herring.
