MIDVALE - George Barton, 78, died July 3, 1982.
Born on November 12, 1903 in Ephraim, Utah to William G. and Lillie Mae Garrick Barton. Married Verda Rollins on June 18, 1924 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died in 1954. Married Bertha Love on June 24, 1955 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mister Barton's educational career covers a period of 46 years, 39 having been spent in Jordan School District (13 as a teacher, counsellor and coach and 26 years as principal of elementary and junior high school). The Union School art collection, composed of 57 original painting by Utah artists, obtained as school projects, purchases and gifts from the same, was initiated by Mr. Barton when he interested students, faculty and parents in this cooperative project. The faculty and PTA had a full length portrait of him painted by the now recognized portrait painter, Alvin Gittens of the University of Utah and presented the same to the collection. Mr. Barton has been active in the LDS Church working in many capacities, such as Teacher in the Sunday School and Mutual, coach of the "M" Men, teacher trainer for many years in the East Jordan Stake and later in the Midvale First Ward chairman of the Ward Finance Building Committee, member of the East Jordan Stake Sunday School Superintendency, counsellor of Midvale First Ward Bishopric; music director of East Jordan and Midvale Stake High Priest Group. He was active throughout his life in music circles as a soloist and quartet member. He was an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for eight years. Mr. Barton was an ardent follower of all athletics and was named tennis champion at USAC during the summer of 1926. He enjoyed swimming, hunting, fishing, and long hikes in the mountains. Mr. Barton has been active in the Scouting program for 45 years, attending meetings with his father in the communities of Southern Utah. He was a bank director since 1966 until the present time, he was vice-president of the bank of Ephraim.
Survivors Wife, Midvale, step-sons, Dale Love, Midvale, Larry Love, Kallispell, Montana, Stephen Love, Centerville, Utah, 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, brother Dr. Donald K. Barton, Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by a daughter, LaRue Barton Barfuss, and a son, George DeVon Barton.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, one p.m., in the Midvale Second Ward, 465 Sixth Avenue. Friends may call at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State, Monday, 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday at the church one hour prior to services. Burial, Midvale City Cemetery.
