Lilya Mae Smith
(January 10, 1919 - February 3, 2011)

Lilya Mae Thornton Smith, 92, of Waycross died Thursday morning (Feb.3, 2011) at Baptist Village Retirement Communities. She was born in Pierce County to the late Ellis Ross Thornton and Pinkie Cason Thornton. She graduated from Blackshear High School in 1935 and moved to Waycross in the late 1930's after she completed Cosmetology School. Mrs. Smith owned Lilya Mae's Beauty Shop for twenty-five years and was a member of The Hairdressers Association. She was a member of Central Baptist Church , Mary Martha Sunday School Class, Merry Makers. Mrs. Smith taught Sunday School and the GA's, active in the flower ministry and in later years volunteered in the office.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, D. M. Smith, Jr.; one sister, Vonice Knowlton; two brothers, Marshall Thornton and D.L. Thornton.

Survivors include one daughter, LaMae Williams (husband Jim), Eastman; two sons, Harold Smith (wife Beth), Waycross, Dan Smith (wife Cathy), Spartanburg, SC; six grandchildren, Daniel Williams, Atlanta, Zack Smith, Waycross, Kelley Smith, Waycross, Elliot Smith, Indianapolis, ID, Taylor Anne Smith, Lake Waccamaw, NC, Hannah Smith, Spartanburg, SC; one sister-in-law, Louise Smith, Roebuck, SC; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 11 am at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 – 9 pm at the funeral home.

The family requests the Mary Martha Sunday School Class to serve as Honorary Pallbearers and should meet at the funeral home by 10:40 am Saturday for the service.
