He was born Feb 12, 1899 at Montezuma, a son of Samuel E and Nancy Virginia Long Garber.
He was a retired minister and educator. He started his teaching career in 1917 at Victory Hill School in Rockingham County. He continued his teaching in Rockingham and adjoining counties until he retired from teaching in 1965, having taught school for 36 years.
He was ordained into the Church of the Brethren in 1927. He conducted numerous evangelistic meetings in both Virginia and West Virginia. Following his retirement from teaching, he served as a full time at Newport and Grottoes Churches of the Brethren. He was a graduate of Bridgewater College and had done post graduate work at the University of Virginia. Before moving to the home, he lived at Port Republic. He was a charter member Port Republic Ruritan Club having been a member for 50 years.
On June 9, 1921 he married Beulah Margaret Wright who is also a resident of the home.
Other survivors include three daughters, Margaret G Pence of McGaheysvlle, Josephine L Garber of Richmond and Nancy G Garr of Culpeper; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Thomas W Geiman with burial at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery near Bridgwater.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at Kyger-Pence Funeral Home near McGaheysville.
