Dr. Raymond W. Esworthy

Dr. Raymond W. Esworthy, 88, of Normal ; died at 12:50 a.m. Sunday (May 26, 1996) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, the Rev. James Bortell and the Rev. Burt Lancaster officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mount Olive Cemetery, rural Urbana, the Rev. David Dees officiating.

He was born Oct. 14, 1907, at Ogden, the son of James Edward and Keturah Johnson Esworthy. He married Pauline "Polly" Stayton Dec. 31, 1930. They celebrated 65 years of marriage last December.

He is survived by his wife, of Normal; and his daughter, Paula Rae Leifel, son-in-law, Dan Leifel, and granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Leifel, all of Bloomington.

His parents, five brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Esworthy graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in 1929, a master's degree in 1930, and in 1943 he received the 12th Ph.D. in accounting from the U of I. He was a math teacher and assistant coach at Champaign High School from 1930 to 1939. From 1939 to 1949 he taught accounting at LaSalle-Peru Oglesby Junior College except for serving two years in the Army from 1943 to 1945, with a tour of duty in England.

In 1949 he came to Illinois State (Normal) University as a professor of accounting. From 1957 to 1967 he served as the first coordinator of budgets under Dr. Robert G. Bone and chaired a committee to establish academic programs in the accounting department. He then served as the first head of the accounting department until his retirement from ISU in 1972.

In 1981 he was honored by the accounting department as the recipient of the first Distinguished Faculty Award. The accounting firm of Arthur-Anderson honored him in 1983 by establishing a scholarship in his name.

Dr. Esworthy belonged to many professional organizations: The American Accounting Association, the National Association of Accountants, the Institute of Internal Audi-tori 2nd phi Delta Kappa. He was listed in the Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the Midwest.

He was a life member of the U of I Alumni Association, the BroMenn Service League and the ISU Annuitant; he was a 46-year member of the First United Methodist Church of Normal.

After his retirement, Dr. Esworthy became an avid golfer and volunteered as a tutor with the GED-Literacy Program. He became a member of the Illini Quarterback Club and attended most U of I home football games.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorials be made to the building fund of the First United Methodist Church of Normal or to the Salvation Army.
