SUICIDE-Mt Thomas Bird, eldest son of Mrs Bird of Trafalgar-street, committed suicide on Sunday afternoon, by hanging himself to the rafter of the kitchen, at his residence in Washington valley. It appears that Mr Bird and his wife had made an engagement to take tea at a friend's house on the afternoon named, and that Mrs. Bird, carrying an infant child, proceeded to pay the visit, leaving her husband to follow. This he did not do, much to his wife's surprise, who, on returning home in the evening, found the doors of the house locked. After waiting for a considerable time for her husband to return, Mrs Bird at length managed to effect an entrance by one of the windows, and proceeding through the house, to her great horror found her husband, as stated, quite dead. An inquest was held on the body yesterday, when a verdict was recorded of temporary insanity. No conceivable reason can be assigned for this rash act. The deceased lived happily with his wife, and so far as is known, had no troubles to affect him. It is said, however, that for some little time he was much excited by passing events. Great sympathy is felt for the friends of the deceased, to whom so unexpected a shock must be a sore trail.
