LEICESTER - John A. Riopel Sr., 70, of Pleasant Street died yesterday in St. Vincent Hospital after a short illness.

He leaves his wife, Lillian M. (Allard) Riopel; a son, John A. Riopel Jr. of Holden; two daughters, Denise Kania of Evans, Ga., and Linda Shea of Dudley; three brothers, Ronald Riopel of Auburn, Paul Riopel of Charlton and Francis Riopel in Florida; two sisters, Jeanette Keeney of Worcester and Eleanor Allard of Northampton; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Mr. and Mrs. Riopel observed their 41st wedding anniversary last Nov. 5. He was born in Auburn, son of Joseph and Eda (Charland) Riopel, and lived here 38 years.

Mr. Riopel was a machinist for 26 years in the research and development department at Jamesbury Corp. in Worcester, retiring in 1986. He was previously a machinist at the former Leland-Gifford Co. in Worcester.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 441st Bombardment Squadron in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater.

Mr. Riopel was a member of St. Jude's Chapel in Rochdale, the bowling league at Bayberry Bowling Lanes in Spencer and Rochdale Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former member of Leicester Council, Knights of Columbus, and C.P. Tuttle Post, American Legion, in Auburn. He was a life member of Worcester Chapter, Disabled American Veterans.

The funeral will be held Thursday from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Jude's Chapel, 487 Pleasant St., Rochdale. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Flowers may be sent, or memorial contributions made to the Auburn District Nursing Association, 41 South St., Auburn, 01501.
