First Sergeant (retired) Victor H. Woods Jr., age 80 of Seguin, Texas was received by His Father after a long battle from the effects of cancer on February 2, 2011.


A strong and loving man, he will be missed by his devoted wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. Victor Woods lived in Seguin since 1971 after his retirement from the United States Army following 24 years of service to his country. He owned and operated Vic's Air Conditioning and Repair Service in Seguin. He attended Southwest Texas State University. Victor Woods was an Eagle Scout and active leader of troop 107 and volunteer in the local Seguin Scout troop as Assistant Scout Master for many years.

Retired First Sgt. Woods served his nation with valor and pride. Some of his assignments included Train Commander, hand picked by General Louis Truman, first cousin to President Truman. He traveled throughout Europe and Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie.

First Sgt. Woods was Rifle Team Coach, ROTC Instructor, and Rifle Team Manager for Texas A&I (now Texas A &M-Kingsville). While Coach for Texas A & I, Sgt. Woods lead the collegiate Rifle Team to their State Championship in 1959. Other competitors for this title included University of Texas at Austin and Rice University. A following assignment included leading the Texas Military Institute (TMI) during the years of HemisFair in San Antonio. First Sgt. Woods was the U.S. Army, Infantry Instructor and Texas Military Institute's Rifle Team Coach. This distinguished Rifle Team fired in the U.S. Invitational Championship Match and out of seventy-six competing teams from all over the United States, TMI placed ninth. Many other awards were awarded at the state level.

First Sgt. Woods served in the Korean Conflict in Company D, 1st Battle Group, 32nd Infantry. Out of 153 soldiers in 38th Company, 30th Battalion only 54 returned home from the Korean Conflict.

First Sgt. Woods received two Silver Stars for heroism. He also received the Belgian Croix de Guerre for saving the lives of five Belgian soldiers. Sgt. Woods served numerous tours to Korea. He also served in Viet Nam. Sgt. Woods distinguished himself receiving five Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, and the Army Cross.
