Gordon was the son of Hiram Madison "Matt" Bailey and Margaret D. Crawford. He married Carrie R. Trammell March 30, 1913 in Fannin County, Georgia. Thomas Crawford performed the ceremony. He was a barber in Blue Ridge for 30 years. He was warmhearted and had that Bailey charm. As he worked at his barber's chair he became friends with persons from all walks of life while listening to their stories of joys, hardships, laughter, and tears.
He and Carrie reared their children on her father's farm in the Barkwood Community located two miles south west of Blue Ridge. Part of the land is now Appalachian Highway. They were farmers and had an apple orchard on the top of Trammell Mountain.
Shippen Brother's Lumber Company was located nearby with access to the railroad. Their largest lumber mill was in east Ellijay. By 1900 production had expanded, and they were exporting lumber to Europe. In the next few decades they had become one of the primary employers of the times.
His father-in-law was in the lumber and sawmill business. He was a member of the National Farmers Union, and was involved in one of the south's greatest environmental disasters cases settled in Georgia and the U.S. Supreme Court.
