Dolgeville, N.Y. — Mr. Jack O. Boulden, 81, of 52 Spencer St., Dolgeville, died Monday morning, Aug. 4, 2008, at his residence, surrounded by his children and other family members. Jack was on dialysis for the past year and a half and his death was due to kidney failure.
Jack was born on November 19, 1926, in Buffalo, the son of John and Gladys (Oliver) Boulden and attended local schools.
He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 on June 29, 1944, and being honorably discharged on June 7, 1946, with the rank of seaman first class. His service included a number of Liberty supply ships in the North Atlantic; having served overseas he received the American Theater Medal, Victory Medal and European Theater Medal.
His marriage to Frances E. Evans took place on Oct. 18, 1947, in Kenmore. They would have celebrated 61 years of marriage this October. His wife, Frances, predeceased him four weeks ago on July 8.
Jack's first job was with the Spaulding Fiber Company in Buffalo, where he did shift work. Then he took a position with the International Paper Company as a boiler operator. This field led him to become a boiler inspector for the Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance Company. He then accepted a position as sales engineer for Commercial Chemical Products and later for the Bond Chemical Company, helping to maintain the physical power plants for hundreds of businesses in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. While with Bond Chemical he won his company's award for the highest annual sales, earning him and his wife a trip to Las Vegas. Jack left Bond Chemical to start his own business, Boulden Boiler Cleaning Inc., and he continued to serve as a boiler consultant to businesses until he retired.
Throughout his life, Jack enjoyed a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. He was a passionate reader, as eager to read a thrilling mystery as to read a lengthy history book. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing, especially with his family and close friends. Jack was an avid bowler and bridge player. He also spent hours in the basement of his home where he enjoyed woodworking, building pieces of furniture for members of his family and caning chairs. Jack loved gardening, cultivating two large vegetable gardens in the back yard of his home. Jack's chili sauce and sweet pickles were coveted by family members and friends.
He is survived by his son and his wife, David and Russeen Boulden of Gray; his daughters and their husbands, Diane and Charles Combs of Dolgeville, Cynthia and Mark Rybaltowski of Ballston Lake and Jacqueline Boulden and her partner, Helen Huffington, of Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Ryan, Amanda, Stacy, Benjamin, William and Colleen; a great-grandson, Kamren; his brother and his wife, William and Pat Boulden of Lockport; a sister, Shirley Stockman of Akron, NY; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with Military Honors will be held Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville. Rev. James Paulson, pastor of the United Lutheran Presbyterian Church of Dolgeville, will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Dolgeville Cemetery. Calling hours are on Wednesday evening from 5-8 p.m.
