Brown City, Aug. 31 – On the eve of leaving this city where he had lived 20 years and in this vicinity practically since the close of the Civil war, for a new home with his daughter, Mrs. William Wilson, Owendale, John J. Bailey, Civil war veteran, died today.

Besides Mrs. Wilson, he is survived by four other daughters: Mrs. Henry Morehead, Detroit; Mrs. Charles Johnson, Midland, Mich.; Mrs. Joseph DesJardine and Mrs. John Green, both of Brown City; four sons, Benjamin, Ubly; William, Independence, Mo.; Robert, Carsonville; and Frank, Port Huron; one brother, Herman Bailey, Bay city.

Mr. Bailey was born in Oakland county Feb. 5, 1845. He came to Burnside township when young where he operated a blacksmith shop several years.

He then farmed In Maple Valley township 36 years. He moved to Ubly when he spent a short time and then returned to Brown City where he had lived 20 years.

He was a retired elder in the Latter-Day Saints church which he served SO years.

Mr. Bailey enlisted in the Tenth Michigan cavalry in 1863 and served during the remainder of the war. He was with General Sherman on his march to the sea. He served in many major engagements.

Funeral services for Mr. Bailey will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Latter-Day Saints church. Elder William Grice, Croswell, assisted by Elder Dexter Foster, Marlette, will officiate. Burial will be in Ubly.

Death further thinned the ranks of the GAR in Sanilac county last week with the passing of John J Bailey, 88, of Brown City.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and burial was in the Ubly cemetery.

Mr Bailey enlisted in the Tenth Michigan Cavalry in 1863, and served with distinction in several major engagements until the close of the war. He was with General Sherman on his march to the sea.
