Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Before the war he worked with his father and brother in the family wholesale grocery business. After served as a Captain in the Richmond Light Infantry Blues, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Virginia Infantry regiment in November of 1861 He later resigned his commission, and served as a military instructor and with the Bureau of Conscription. Late in the war, after he was appointed Captain in the 4th Virginia Reserves, he was included in the discussion as to whether the Confederate Government should enlist African-American soldiers for service. When the war ended he moved to Botetourt County,Virginia, where he resumed his career as grocery merchant.
