Johnston's case went unsolved for more than 15-years. When another OSBI agent took over the cold case, he found DNA that would link the case to the killer. The family says they are so thankful to that agent and the director of OBSI.
A jury convicted the offender in this case; and on August 19, 2021, the judge followed the jury's recommendation for a death sentence. The serial killer pleaded guilty to three murders in Texas with a life sentence for each murder in order to avoid another death sentence. He is also serving a 60-year sentence in a separate kidnapping case in Texas. He will be eligible for parole in Texas in 2047 at the age of 88.
