Author and poet. He wrote poetry and the 'Essays of Elia' and together with his sister, Mary Lamb, wrote 'Tales from Shakespeare' which was the standard introduction to the poet's work for Victorian children. In 1796 in a manic fit, Mary stabbed their mother to death and Charles saved her from the madhouse by volunterring to care for her.
