Scyril Phillip Sizer was born on Aug. 18, 1921, in Eagle Bend, Minn., to the late Luke and Angela Sizer. He was raised in the Osakis, Minn., area for most of his young life.
He met and married his sweetheart, Betty Lou Hansen on Nov. 5, 1945, in St. Paul. Scy had a variety of jobs but worked for General Electric for over 25 years and retired from the Mountain Iron office in 1986. He received awards for inventing better/more efficient ways to repair big motors/machines. He and Betty ventured into owning and operating a small general store in Buyck, Minn., from 1964 to 1968 at which time they sold the store and home and moved to Proctor, Minn. After their youngest daughter graduated from high school they moved back to the Iron Range where they both continued to work and finally retire. Due to his illness they moved to Hermantown, Minn., in 1992 to be closer to family.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Portland. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor and was on one of the two ships out to sea that fatal day, Dec. 7, 1941. He was proud to be an American and serve his Country. He loved the outdoors, gardening, camping with his family, hunting and fishing, and just being in the woods with the dogs and family. Many a tall tale was told!
Scy was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Glenn, and Don; sisters, Irene Collins, Rachel (Peggy) Castle, and Edith Tschample.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; children: Larry (Bonnie) Sizer, Zillah (Darrel) Smith, Levere (Sun) Sizer, Jeanne (Norm) Ruth; grandchildren, Christine Lovell, Kerry (Tom) Brewer, Conrad (Jen) Sizer, Ryan (Andrea) Ruth, and Kevin Sizer; four great-grandchildren; brother, George Sizer; sisters: Iona Anderson, Lucille Vanderwerf; and many nieces and nephews.
