Described as the "father of the Greek Revival movement in Kentucky architecture", Gideon Shryock was a pioneer Kentucky architect who designed the Old Jefferson County Courthouse in Louisville, Old Morrison at Transylvania University in Lexington and the Orlando Brown house in Frankfort. He designed two state capitol buildings which are extant, though no longer used as capitols, in Frankfort, Kentucky and Little Rock, Arkansas. He apprenticed under the important American architect William Strickland in Philadelphia as a young man. He was the namesake of Gideon Shryock Elementary School, now merged into Greathouse/Shryock Traditional Elementary School in St. Matthews.
