Benjamin Douglas "Doug" Merrell was the only child of parents Charles Woodson Merrell and his wife Ida Ted "Teddy" Durrett.

He worked as a musician full time in the 1930s, playing with the big bands of the era. He played the bass, guitar, steel guitar and banjo. Later on he worked as an inspector for ITT Gilfillian for 25 years. He worked weekends playing in the band for the rest of his life.

He married Marie Peters on August 10, 1952 at the Arlington Avenue Christian Church in Los Angeles, California. She had two grandchildren which loved him dearly as if he were their biological grandfather. He had a kind, gentle manner. He and Marie were the perfect couple.

He loved playing his music and traveling to Washington to visit with Marie's family. He was loved by all who knew him. He was my "adopted" grandfather and I miss him very much.
