Hanson Lawhon Of Herald
Staff; Funeral Thursday
Elva Hanson Lawhon, Jr., for 13 years on the advertising staff of the Big Spring Herald and director of its national advertising, died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday in Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene after a comparatively brief illness.
He had entered a local hospital nearly two weeks ago and last Friday was transferred to Abilene or special treatment for lung complications. He was 47.
Funeral service is to be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Nalley-Pickle Rosewood Chapel with Dr. R. Gage Lloyd, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Memorial Park.
Mr. Lawhon had let a specific request that memorials be made to the Elks Crippled Children Hospital in Gonzales, Texas.
He was born Nov. 16, 1922 in Taylor, Tex., where he finished high school. He attended the University of Texas briefly until going into the military service in 1943. He served in the Army in Trinidad.
He then entered newspaper work and was with the Winkler County News, Kermit; the Beaumont Enterprise-Journal, and the Terrell Tribune before coming to Big Spring.
Mr. Lawhon was a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church and was active in the Elks Lodge No. 1936, having served as it exalted ruler.
Mr. Lawhon was married in Taylor in 1944 to Miss Margaret Lamb, who survives. Other survivors are a son, Duane Lawhon of Ballinger; a daughter, Mrs. Carl Henkell, Big Spring; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Elva Rhea Collins, Austin, and a brother, W. H. Lawhon, Carlsbad, N.M.
Pallbearers will be J. W. Dickens, Dick Egan, Oliver Cofer, Bill Lansing, Tommy Stephens and Harold Canning.
