Steward of Emperor Maximilian of Austria in the town of Bruges. When the people of Bruges revolted against the Emperor, Lankhals took his employer's side, and was executed. When Maximilian finally succeeded in suppressing the revolt, he ordered the people of Bruges to maintain swans in the town in memory of the dead man (whose name translates as 'long neck'). The swans are still there.
