Joe Burch's (left) Blacksmith Shop at Bokoshe, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, Oklahoma (Abt. 1890). Helper's name was Wilhite or Wilhoit. Joe's grandfather and uncle also had a blacksmith shop in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Many of the Burches were blacksmiths.

Joseph Wesley "Big Joe" Burch at the Redwine's Store in downtown Bokoshe, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. (Abt. 1890.) Joe wasn't really very big but there was a younger Joe in town that they called "Little Joe." The locals also called Bokoshe, "Shake Rag." They said that it was because in the dusty mining town the women were always out on the front porch shaking out their dust rags.
