August Winkel, 89, of Cleveland, a retired Town of Meeme (Manitowoc County) farmer, died Monday morning ( Aug 4, 1978) at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for six days.

He was born Sept 27, 1888, in the Town of Meeme, a son of Herman and Caroline Redetzke, Winkel. He attended district school.
On June 18, 1919, he married Martha Meyer at St John UCC, Town of Herman, The couple located on the Winkel home farm in the town of Meeme. His wife died Dec 15, 1965.
He was a member of St. John UCC, Schwartzwald.
He was a school board member for the former Pigeon River School, Town of Meeme and a past director of Ada Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors are a daughter Mrs. Gerald (Verna) Athorp, Cleveland; a son, Arno of Cleveland; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs/ Martha Prueter of Kiel; and Mrs. Adela Sander of Cleveland and a brother Theodore of Kiel.
A brother preceded him in death.

Burial in the St John UCC Cemetery.
