John George (commonly known as George) was born in Dietel, Saratov, Russia. His parents were David and Katherine Elizabeth. He immigrated to Colorado with two brothers (Alex and Henry), and one sister (Elizabeth, married a Reichert). He also had seven siblings who died in infancy in Russia. George was a nephew of Peter Weinmeister Sr., and a first cousin to Peter Sr.'s six sons, all of whom immigrated to Canada in 1899. Some time before 1912 George's brother Alex moved to Rhein, and worked with his uncle and cousins in several different business ventures. George and his family remained in Colorado.

George married Marie Katherine Weideman in Colorado in 1904. He and Marie had at least four children, including: Marie (b. 1905, married a Wagner), John George Jr., and Herman.
