Chico Weekly Chronicle Record, Saturday, August 3, 1895, pg 4 col 2: Sudden Death. Mrs. Josephine Martin Passed Beyond Yesterday. Came to California in Early Days and Resided in Chico Nearly Three Decades. The announcement of the death of Mrs. Josephine Martin, widow of Alexander Martin, yesterday carries with it surprise and sorrow to the large circle of friends of that noble woman.

Sunday evening she sat upon the porch of her residence for an hour or more, chatting and laughing with her son, Charles, and about 10 o’clock retired. She was seemingly in excellent health. About 1:30 she arose and awakened her son. She could hardly speak, but she told him to call in a neighbor and get a doctor as quickly as possible.

Her son did as commanded. As soon as a neighbor was called in, he mounted a horse and summoned Dr. McFadyen. Before the doctor of Charley arrived, Mrs. Martin was dead. There is no doubt that she died of heart failure.

The deceased was born in Charleston [sic: Charlestown], N.H. in March, 1840. In 1861 she was married to Alexander Martin, in Carson City, Nevada. Her maiden name was Josephine St. Clair. In 1868 the family moved to Chico, where Mr. Martin engaged in various occupations. He died in 1890.

Though Mrs. Martin led a humble life in Chico, she was widely known, and scores speak praises for her. She was a thoroughly Christian mother. She was an Advent in religious belief.

She leaves three sons to mourn her loss – Fred, Charles and William Martin.

The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o’clock, from the family residence.
