Major League Baseball Player. He made his major league debut as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1958 but achieved his greatest success as a member of the Detroit Tigers from 1960 to 1974. His best year was 1961 when he led the American League with a .361 batting average while slugging 41 home runs. Unfortunately his accomplishments that year were overshadowed by Roger Maris who broke Babe Ruth's single season home run record by hitting 61 home runs. He hit .385 in the 1968 World Series leading the Detroit Tigers to a thrilling seven game series win over the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. For his career he hit .271 with 377 home runs and 1,103 RBI's. He died prematurely in a boating accident off an island in Northern Lake Michigan in 1986.
