"Jemima Suggett Johnson was the first to suggest bringing water, and led the brave women to the spring when it was surrounded by Indians in ambuscade, thus making possible the defense of Bryant Station. With her was her daughter, Elizabeth, aged ten, who carried a piggin. When the fort was attacked a lighted arrow from an Indian bow fell into the cradle of her baby brother, Richard, but Elizabeth extinguished the flames, and he lived to become Vice-President of the United States."
