Chester Smith was born in 1887 in Wilmot Twp. in Waterloo Co., and died in 1973 at the Bluewater Rest Home in Zurich. He married Mabel Wilhelm in 1916 in Milverton.

Chester L. Smith was the Publisher and Editor of the Zurich Herald, a weekly newspaper. Chester did not retire at age 65 in 1952, but continued to publish until December of 1958. In the first edition of the Zurich Citizens News which replaced the Herald, in an article entitled "Popular Demand For Newspaper Made Citizens News Possible" it stated - "The first newspaper in the village was founded by Daniel Dyer in 1900 and has continued ever since. In 1914 Andrew F. Hess took over and took as partner, Chester L. Smith. From 1930 to December 31, 1957, Mr. Smith was editor, publisher and owner. We would not note this occasion without passing the highest tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Smith for the honest duty performed by them during those many years, they being impartial in their daily conduct, regardless of race, creed or colour, and as publisher Mr. Smith has left an example which will be difficult to duplicate."
