Clayton Smith's early years were spent in Wilmot Twp. in Waterloo Co. until the family moved to Hay Twp. in Huron Co. about 1902.
In 1914 he married Susanna Wilhelm of New Hamburg.

Along with his father Daniel Schmidt, Clayton purchased 150 acres in 1902 and this transaction marked the beginning of the family business, Bayview Farms and Enterprises Ltd on the shores of Lake Huron at the hamlet of St. Joseph.

Clayton managed the farm until his two sons were old enough to take over. At one time they had 1,800 cherry trees, two acres of strawberries, two acres of raspberries and 20 acres of peach trees as well as the maple syrup from their bush. In one particularly good year, they picked 4,000 baskets of peaches which sold for $1 per basket. It was described as "the year which got the family on its feet".

Susanna passed away in 1973 at the age of 96 and two years later Clayton died at age 90.

An article in the Lakeshore Advance newspaper (Zurich) stated that the "Smith family were major players in the hamlet's development - Bayview has a long history and the Smith family played a great part in the development of the area south of St. Joseph."
