Mt. Pleasant, S.C. - Annie Louise Chestnut Squires, age 90, formerly of Surfside Beach died Monday, September 11, 2006 in Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Squires was born May 27, 1916 in Horry County, the daughter of the late James David Chestnut and Annie Belle Ray. She was a graduate of Aynor High School Class of 1934 and Southeastern Secretarial College in Florence. She was the widow of Thomas Ansel Squires. Mrs. Squires had been a resident of Sandpiper Convalescent Center in Mt. Pleasant since July of 2001.

In 1925 she, her father, and two brothers, James and Robert, moved to Surfside Beach, then known as Floral Beach. For several years her father was caretaker of the beach which was owned by George Holliday of Gallivant?s Ferry. The family lived in the rear of ?the old store? located near the present Surfside Drive. During the winter months they lived in the ?Shady Side Inn,? the beach?s first and only hotel.

In 1955 she and her husband began managing Surfside Fishing Pier, Inc. Following his death in 1962, she continued to manage the pier until 1966, at which time she opened The Beach Corner Gift Shop on the corner of Surfside Drive and Ocean Boulevard.

In 1967 she was the first woman elected to the Surfside Beach Town Council and also served as Mayor Protem. She was a member of Socastee United Methodist Church and Charter Member of Surfside United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons: Thomas Ray Squires of West Columbia and Robert Michael Squires of Mt. Pleasant; brother, David Eugene Chestnut of Winter Park, FL; sister, Rev. Betty C. Hughes of Isle of Palms, SC; 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 4 great, great-grandchildren. Mrs. Squires was preceded in death by a son, Rev. James Franklin Squires, and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Isle of Palms. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Socastee United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.
