On December 19, 1848, Stephen married Mary M. Hadley, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Hadley III. They were both 21 years old at the nuptials. The couple would become parents to 8 known children, many of whom are buried here: Franklin Frances Joseph Woodard (ca. 1850), Mary Virginia Woodard (1851-1887), Congressman Frederick Augusta Woodard (1854-1914), Frances "Fannie" A. Woodard (ca. 1857), Margaret "Maggie" P. Woodard (ca. 1860), Elizabeth "Betty" Woodard (ca. 1863), Sidney Albert Woodard (1865-1915), and Paul Lee Woodard (1869-1939).
Stephen Jr. remained on the land in Black Creek Township, where in addition to being a physician, he was a wealthy farmer and merchant. The Black Creek United Methodist Church, organized in 1873, first met in a school building owned by Dr. Stephen Woodard. A new brick church, begun in 1948, was built on land gifted by Dr. Woodard's son, Paul.
Dr. Woodard was widowed in 1874 when his wife of 25 years died at age 47. He survived her 23 years, passing in 1897, just about 1 month before his 70th birthday.
Of his children, Congressman Frederick A. Woodard is perhaps the most famous. He is buried here in Maplewood. [Memorial #23232451.]
